All About Pilates and What We Can Do For You!
Pilates was created by Joseph H. Pilates during World War 1. His study of yoga and martial arts, led to the development of his unique Pilates philosophy. Joseph Pilates worked with war veterans and dancers in Europe. Eventually, he immigrated to the United States and works with New York dancers and ballerinas at the New York City Ballet. More than 70 years later, his techniques have been practiced around the world. This system of precise movement can be practiced simply on a mat alone or by using a combination of specialized equipment including Joseph’s favorite – the Cadillac, barrels, the reformer, chairs as well as many other apparatus and small accessories.
Pilates exercises enhance:
- Core stabilization
- Improving or correcting postural deviations
- Neuromuscular re-education
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Coordination
- Mental focus
Pilates and physical rehabilitation benefits
In 1984, the Center for Sports Medicine at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, San Francisco, began to use some of Joseph Pilates' concepts to rehabilitate and condition dancers and athletes. Physicians and therapists at the hospital created a new system, combining Pilates' principles with current practices, standards and research in dance and sports medicine. Work at Saint Francis became recognized internationally, bringing it to the attention of mainstream health and fitness communities.
The sexy bonus
A flat tummy! Killer abs, a firm bottom line, are all an added bonus of practicing Pilates on a regular basis. Pilates will trim out your waist line while flattening your belly by developing the all mighty transversis abdominis (TVA), the “corset muscle”, and correcting postural deviations. Oh, did we mention that it will improve your golf game? Pilates is the perfect cross-training activity for your golf game. If it works for Tiger Woods it can work for you!
Pilates includes an emphasis on focused breathing associated with activating the deep trunk musculature. The result is heightened awareness of posture, improved efficiency of movement and increased energy that will carry you throughout your day.
Within 10 sessions you will stand taller, you will move with more grace, the waist line of your pants will become comfortable again, and your back pain will begin to diminish if not be completely alleviated.
